Spiral of Despair : Ocean Waste Art Installation

Year : 2024

AI - Assisted Environmental Art Installation / Conceptual Sculpture

Inspired by : Human Emotion, Mental Struggles, and the Endless Loop of Anxiety and Hopelessness

We all go through times in life where we deal with overthinking. Along with it come feelings like anxiety about the future, feeling not good enough, hopelessness, and even depression. This has become a constant in modern life. In moments when these feelings are at their strongest, I wanted to control them, instead of them controlling me. :) I wondered, what if these emotions became an art installation? Which one would make me feel "This is it!"?

I looked for a large, abstract form that felt broken and worn out. I wanted circular or spiralshapes to show the feeling of being trapped in the same cycles. I chose materials that were abandoned, unusable, or recyclable, to show the causes and effects of depression. Hopelessness? I used a faded colorpalette to highlight that feeling. I also wanted the installation to be in the middle of the endless ocean, where its isolation would make it stand tall, just like how overthinking and being alone with our minds can make these feelings grow inside us.

But when I looked at the designs that matched my thoughts, I didn’t see something made of bad emotions; I saw beauty! Maybe, in the endless possibilities of the ocean, all those thoughts that wear us down are actually gathering to protect us from future challenges. Maybe sometimes beauty rises from chaos and makes ustronger. Everyone sees things differently, but maybe this is what feeling art is all about. :)

The installation is conceptual, abstract, and emotional. It uses waste materials to make a powerful visual and symbolic statement. The spiral structure rises from the ocean, telling a story of endless emotional loops and environmental neglect. It combines the fragility of human feelings with the rawness of decayed materials.

This large-scale art installation is made entirely from discarded plastic, rusted metal, shattered glass, and torn fabrics, placed alone in the middle of the ocean. Its spiral form reflects the repetitive and consuming nature of human emotional suffering, such as anxiety, exhaustion, and despair.

  • Spiral form representing emotional loops

  • Recycled plastic bottles, rusty metals, shattered glass, and fabrics

  • Broken, corroded textures and jagged surfaces

  • Color palette: dull greys, rust orange, dirty white, deep black

  • Ocean reflections and scattered light from glass fragments

  • Towering structure in isolation with a dramatic presence

  • Contrast between human waste and the infinite sea
